“Autumn Tangle” (1920) by William Henry Holmes

The Magic of October
by Vaughn Neeld

Within the tangled branches of trees and leaves,
luminous sunshine turns the copse into
a golden canopy above the forest floor.

Rich textures mingle within
trailing vines that drape above dappled ground.

Within a clerestory radiance,
the forest,        hushed,            awaits the entrance
of an alluring autumn nymph trailing
filaments of gleaming arboreal light.

Until then, red and orange and yellow foliage             waits,
anticipates her approaching whirlwind.

But, for now, all is tranquil,     gleaming,         quiescent.
