Marshmallows
by Jeannie E. Roberts
Year-round I keep a bag in the refrigerator
and sometimes an extra in the freezer.
My sweet tooth appreciates the taste.
Nothing beats the sugary blend
especially roasted over open flames.
But before the cylindrical shapes transform
you’ll need the right tool to hold them in place.
Some folks call them s’mores sticks
campfire forks or roasting skewers.
Though a found stick with a pointy end
will work just fine
and it doesn’t matter if it’s a little dirty.
Some say it adds to the flavor.
I’d tend to agree.
Whichever way you eat them–
toasted or as is–
they’re a source of satisfying sweetness.
If you’re a calorie counter
worry not
for one regular-size
is twenty-three calories
and a jumbo is ninety.
Around the firepit
I usually eat at least four of the regular-size
and I don’t count calories–
but I do
count my blessings.
