“Autumn Tangle” (1920) by William Henry Holmes
Maturation
by Michael Escoubas
Poems are like this wood
born
in the womb
of loam-rich soil where the earth
gives birth
to larvae of words
and leafy cleavages
of oak and maple
as in the mystery
of how a poem happens
and like a parent who
turns
in wonder
at what his child has become
the poet himself
weary
(having given everything)
ripens
in the breathless spices
of the child he loves.
