“Autumn Tangle” (1920) by William Henry Holmes
The Spin of Magic
by Jeannie E. Roberts
Clusters of chlorophyll imbue the thicket,
remind us of the brio of summer, as the silky floss
of milkweed floats near a clearing of light.
We’ve entered the month of surrender,
where the wheel of color bathes in the ambers
of sugar maple, basks in the rusts of red oak,
as the leafy jewels of sumac
speckle the woodlands in brick.
The wand of autumn glows as we melt
within a bowl of flaxen, saffron, and peach.
We’ve entered the month of surrender,
where we twirl, creating our own blur of luster,
falling to the ground, letting our lightheadedness
turn to the luminosity of laughter.
Love spins its own magic.
