“Autumn Tangle” (1920) by William Henry Holmes

Tunnel of Gold
by Wesley D. Sims

Did Claude Monet and Thomas Kinkade collaborate on this art? A circular pattern of gold, amber, bronze leaves and flowers speckled with orange and reddish tints form a tunnel that seems to draw you in. Clear colors of foliage smear into amorphous yellows toward the center circle. Green leaves at the bottom break monotony of the scene while reds and tangerines spice up the painting and pull attention to the lower right. White light in the center pulls you through this tunnel of bright colors to the wooded back edge of a flower garden into the mystery of fog. But it pulls you into a trap–tall slender posts of a metal fence bring you to a hard stop, leaves you wondering what lies beyond or beneath the fog.
