Wings of Gold
by Judith K. Witherow

White mesh bag
pregnant with freshly
added thistle seed
swings freely from
purple smoke tree.

Wild canaries cling
in lopsided rows
clutching any space
their claws can snag
on the bulging sack.

Their size and shape
mirror milkweed pods
the brilliant yellow
of each tiny bird
shrugs off comparison.

No time for descriptive
nonsense by onlookers
the eye is not the true
beholder of such beauty
nature chose the color.
