Around the Wheelbarrow by the Garden Shed
by Paulette Demers Turco
...after the watercolour by Hamid Saadati

When shadows of a row of sprouting aspen trees
cross a sandy path to climb a shed’s adobe
wall, in mimicry of quivering aery leaves
sheltering robins’ trills, a gardener’s hours begin–
wheelbarrow poised to serve throughout a summer day.
Shadows of conifers seem sketched across a lawn.
An hour past dawn, a keen observer’s eye is drawn
beyond magnolia branches to a shuttered bay–
its trim a vibrant teal green, so common in
Provence, yet absence of an entryway deceives
a scanning eye drawn to a stuccoed manse. So be
this home or monthlong stay, it breathes in a light breeze.
Leave Montparnasse today. Bring canvas, paints. We’ll rent
and wake to Carmine Vaza roses’ honey scent.
