No More
by Marcel Aime Duclos
...after the watercolour by Hamid Saadati

House empty and dark
no life in the window
overlooking the gathering
after the funeral

Family and friends
feasted on his garden vegetables
on fruits from his well-tended orchards

The carriage shed        silent now
The vintage wheelbarrow        abandoned

How he belly-laughed
that summer afternoon–
a half century ago–
when        stumbling in joy
he wheeled his grandchildren
on the well-worn path
a week before
the funeral
