Nocturnal Lights
by Nick Ozment

I am a harbinger of death
for a field mouse.
I am two great white lights
that approach with a roar
and a trembling of the earth.

I do not see the mouse.
In my headlights I see
the owl as it spots the mouse.

In this moment I am Wendigo,
last thing seen by a field mouse
before a taloned shadow on wings
snatches him up.

My passing is marked
by two red eyes cast backwards
glowing brightly for a second,
then dimming.

Somewhere in my wake
a wide-eyed field mouse
sees for the first and last time
a familiar field from the
dizzying height of the stars.
