Prayer for What Is Seen & Unseen in September
by Lana Hechtman Ayers

Prayer for the Harvest Moon
to slip out of night sky’s
sleeve of clouds
& illuminate abundance.

For the red-winged blackbirds
migrating south
to reach wetlands
unclaimed by climate change.

For September ladybugs
circling windows frames
searching for shelter & warmth
to discover both.

For the wilted woodland sage,
flocked to purple velvet to flourish,
that craves so little sun & only
a few kisses of rain to revive.

For the lonely frog singing
his too-late autumn mating song.
For the mirror to hold fast the beloved’s
last breath long after they’ve gone.
