Sun and Shadow–Salute to September
by Michael Escoubas
...after the watercolour by Hamid Saadati
The sun retreats into the shadows
as trees prepare to drop their leaves.
Grass fades from green to brown and crickets’
chords diminish to ritardando.
Their songs can still be heard though,
as if there’s more to say, and not much
time to say it in. The wheelbarrow
rests half-in, half-out of lessened light.
He inhales September’s fragrance,
a mixture of cut grass, and air crisp
with dawn’s heroic chill. The seasons
seem to signal what is true in life:
Let September’s subtle signs and songs wrap you in a revery of peace.
