Summer Shadows
by Elayne Clift
...after the watercolour by Hamid Saadati
Trees bloom while casting shadows on a quiet landscape,
As if they know something is about to change.
Flowers struggle beneath an open window,
Inviting cool breezes to waft their way inside.
An empty wheelbarrow free of garden detritus,
Reveals that there will be no more planting,
Or bouquets until spring awakens flowers again.
The serenity is sad yet welcoming in its calmness.
Even the shadows cast a glow, promising another season,
When beauty flourishes once more.
The cycle of life does not die. It rests.
Stillness refreshes living things.
We are grateful because we know new colors and patterns will return,
Perhaps vibrant and new, or reassuringly familiar.
Whichever, we will love what appears.
We will nourish new growth, in nature, and in ourselves.
