Under an Apricot Sky
by Gay Williford

Autumn dusk brings an apricot light,
making our farm seem a magical place,
eight families gather at the cookout site,
relatives welcomed in warm embrace.

Hamburgers, sweet corn, cobblers–the fare,
hide-and-seek, tag, ball games–the fun.
Coral skies fade, soon darkness they’ll wear,
talk buzzes, like cicadas, in waning sun.

Kid squeals and dog barks fill the air,
contented adults lounge under a tree,
enjoying time together–something rare,
“Let’s meet more often,” they all agree.

These well-loved evenings, hoped a girl of eight,
would occur forever, they seemed so great!
