The Waiting Cart
by Priscilla Turner Spada
...after the watercolour by Hamid Saadati

Here on a dappled courtyard pathway
sits an empty hand-pushed cart;
no broom or rake is here as part
of the gardener's tools. He’s unseen.
Long shadows hint of end of day,
ochers splashed with aubergine.
Umbers paint the lined-up trees;
green, ruffled leaves imply a breeze.

The idle cart is but a sign–
there is work that's left behind.
The edging stones and potted plants
need caring for at this old manse.
Will the chores get done today,
or has Grand-pere been whisked away?
