Barren Shore

Pastel skies, blotted with soft pinks
and yellows, overlook a barren
stretch of sandy beach.
Small piles of brown kelp
have washed up near the shore,
bordered by a short grassy cliff
that follows the curve of beach.
The empty coastline signals
that perhaps hot temperatures have
discouraged the usual shore activities–
leisurely walks, sunning, swimming and frisbee.
A tall, proud white lighthouse
stands on a nearby grass-topped point of land,
patiently awaiting darkness to light
its beam and offer safety to those at sea.
