"A Michigan Lighthouse on a Montauk Shore” ~ Painting by Sharmagne Leland-St. John
The Beacon
by Howard Osborne
Between land and sea, it is at a junction
The lighthouse sits on its own chalk cliff
It was chosen as an appropriate location
Ready, it’s silently waiting in anticipation
Danger lurked when sailing close to shore
A light beam shown, as it used to before
But still can shine, on a special occasion
We’re now in an age of radar navigation
Hope that its calling will be when, not if
But of course, it still can fulfil a function
Ceasing operation was a painful decision
Now, it is just attractive accommodation
From the top, there is a wonderful view
Just open sea and the horizon, it is true
And imagining what is across the ocean
It is a place triggering a mixed emotion
Pink clouds fill the skies, hiding the blue
But a deserted beach may appeal to you
Perhaps for some, it’s a unique vacation
Not what the early builders did envision
