Forest Floor
by Nick LeForce

Every roll from heel to toe
is a banquet for my hungry soul.

The freshly fallen summer rain
softens the forest floor terrain

the sound of cawing crows,
the crinkling legs of crickets,

the residue of droplets plopping
leaf to leaf from high to low

the dappled light of early morning
peeking through the canopy,

the blue sky above it all
bowing down in reverie,

the earthy smell of loosened soil
slowly lapping up life’s oil

the mushroom’s white capped gowns
newly sprouted from the ground

the glistening green of moss on bark
the downward squirrel perched atop

senses wide as an open door
my foot falls on the forest floor

and every roll from heel to toe
is a banquet for my hungry soul.
