Mountain Rendezvous
by Gay Williford

Nine year old Lea had packed a snack,
a bottle of water, a rain jacket and
Grampa’s treasured, carved cane.
Heading out to the mountain path,
she felt an excitement ripple through her
as she thought of Loki, her beloved collie,
who had passed away two months ago.
How she missed him!

Stately pines shaded the hiking trail
and wildflowers dotted the meadows.
Near an Aspen grove, where they
used to romp and picnic
she spotted his grave,
marked with a special slate rock.
Kneeling there, she shared her feelings,
wiped away some tears and whistled
his favorite “come home now” tune.
Leaving a small bone, she reluctantly
began the return journey home, accepting
that now, her beloved Loki was home,
truly at home, and, as if by some invisible spirit,
she felt Loki’s warm breath on her cheek.
