The Red Poppies’ Field
by Priscilla Turner Spada

Imagine this … a picture plane …
wildflower dotted meadows the main
attraction. Blooming poppies spill
with bright red profusion, fill
the painted field down to the frame.

Blossoms, like ruffled skirts in Spain,
dance across the flowered plain.
But this is Monet’s wide French hill.
Imagine this.

A field where long-gone soldiers have lain,
and given their lives. No trace remains.
They'd fought and fallen during the drills
of war, among the trickling rills
that now feed the flowers again.
Imagine this.
